PESHAWAR: Sabir Mayar, one of the prime accused in Mashal Khan’s murder case, surrendered before the Mardan Police on Monday.
The accused was the president of the Pakhtun Students Federation at Abdul Wali Khan University Mardan and had been hiding since Mashal Khan’s murder.
Mayar stated that he had surrendered so that justice could be served. He added in his statement to the police that he and Mashal were close friends and the University administration had knowingly involved him. He stated that he had arranged Mashal’s interview with Khyber News. Mayar informed the police that camps had been set on campus to protest against fee hike, corruption and appointment on to positions a week earlier.
Supreme Court (SC) had previously dismissed the suo moto notice case on Mashal’s murder case following the arrests made by Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC). With Mayar’s surrender, now only one of the proclaimed offenders, Asad Katlang is still at large.
A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Saqib Nisar observed that the proceedings of the trial had been concluded, a verdict had been passed awarding one of the offenders death sentence and life imprisonment to another five.
